It is September — it’s back-to-school month — but maybe the annual autumn ritual shouldn’t be just for kids. A recent survey by Northwestern Mutual revealed that more and more Americans are making work a part of their retirement plan.

Two-thirds of the survey respondents cite financial security as the primary reason for working well past traditional retirement age. Other studies conducted by the MIT AgeLab suggest that many people want to work longer because they find meaning in their work, and their workplace colleagues are the heart of their social life.

For many, the idea of doing another few years of what they have done for decades is too much to take — they may need, or even want to work longer, but desire to do something entirely different. Regardless of the reason to work in retirement, can you make the business case to stay on the job?
